Animal Testing in China

A number of weeks ago, I wrote an article for Label Press about cruelty-free and vegan makeup. This article is actually what led me to working on this blog with Jo.

Recently while shopping during a sale on Naturisimo, I was brought back to one of the key points of that article: in some countries, animal testing is required by law. When searching for cruelty-free companies, be sure to check for more than just their own philosophy and practices. If, for example, a company sells in China, then their products are subject to Chinese law, and therefore may be tested on animals. Even if the company itself doesn’t practice animal testing, they are subject to pre- and post- market testing in China.

While shopping at Naturisimo, I found three such companies that fall into this trap: Caudalie, Jurlique, and Burts Bees. While each one is independently cruelty-free, they also sell at least some of their products in China.

It is obviously up to each individual consumer to decide what companies they will support and buy from. I won’t presume to tell you, as the reader and consumer, that you shouldn’t buy from these companies. In all honesty, I’m not even sure what my position is on this particular subject matter. But I think that it’s important to be as informed as possible when tackling these issues, and I hope this blog brings you one step closer to accomplishing that goal.
