Everything has packaging now. Things that don’t need packaging have packaging. Things that do need packing have extra packaging. There’s a lot of packaging going around, and none of it is good for the environment.
Ready meals are often cited as one of the worst offenders, and not without reason. One meal is wasting a whole lot of plastic/ cardboard/ combo. Most of us need a ready meal as a treat now and again, but for the love of god at least recycle the packet. It takes two seconds of your life to pull apart the separate plastic and cardboard sections and put them in the correct recycling bins. Not bothering does A LOT of damage to the environment.
Of course, recycling is very important, but ideally we should be minimising the amount of excess packaging we consume in the first place. When buying something, try to think about the plastic to product ratio. Just having the thought in mind, can steer you away from some of the worst offenders. If there’s as much plastic as product, there’s too much plastic, way too much.
We’ve got so used to everything coming in packaging that we barely see it any more. It’s not just food products though, it’s clothes and make up and… well, almost everything we consume. Not buying products with excess packaging sends the message that we don’t want or need it. Changing your consumer habits is a powerful way to contribute to a shift in the market.
